Mechanism of action: PVP is a hydrophilic polymer that has no antibacterial effect itself, but due to its affinity for cell membranes, it can directly introduce iodine to the cell surface of bacteria, which is very meaningful for improving the antibacterial activity of iodine. The target of iodine is the bacterial cytoplasm and cytoplasmic membrane, killing bacteria immediately within a few seconds. When molecules necessary for biological survival such as sulfhydryl compounds, peptides, proteins, lipids and cytosine come into contact with PVP-I, they are immediately oxidized or iodinated by iodine, making them inactive, achieving a longer bactericidal effect.
Application performance
Povidone iodine has a broad spectrum of microbial killing or inhibition effects, and can kill a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, tetracocci, Candida albicans, Bacillus subtilis, spores, fungi, Escherichia coli, Shigella dysenteriae, Proteus, Citrobacter, Diphtheroids, Bacillus foreskin, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Pseudomonas maltophilia, Bacillus anthracis, flagellates, and Chlamydia. It is mainly used for gynecological inflammation, skin inflammation of tinea, oral inflammation, oral ulcers, burns, various traumas, surgical operations, skin disinfection before injection, and disinfection of medical equipment; in addition, it is also used for sterilization and disinfection of household utensils and utensils; sterilization and disinfection of food industry, breeding industry, and prevention and control of animal diseases, etc., and is the first choice of disinfectant.
Povidone iodine solution has no pungent odor, is non-irritating and non-damaging to the skin, mucous membranes, and respiratory tract, does not produce secondary pollution, and does not produce drug resistance. It is easy to dilute, easy to use, and has stable properties. It is currently the most advanced environmentally friendly disinfectant. It is very effective when treating general traumas such as human burns, frostbite, knife wounds, abrasions, contusions, and is particularly suitable for diseases such as skin inflammation and ulceration. Because it has little irritation, it is less painful than iodine tincture and alcohol, is easily accepted by patients, and has a wide range of uses and definite effects, and has basically replaced skin and mucous membrane disinfectants such as alcohol, red mercury, iodine tincture, and gentian violet. In addition, when povidone-iodine is made into solution, it is gradually dissolved in water, and free iodine is released to sterilize, and because iodine is slowly released in a surfactant, the bactericidal action is lasting, and irritation is low, and coloration disappears, which overcomes the shortcomings of iodine tincture that is easy to sublimate, yellow dye, and has stimulation.
